Project: Water Quality and Pollution in Kumasi

This project will explore the quality of water in Kumasi, closely examining the condition of digging wells in urban centers. The student will look for feasible solutions to poor quality, concentrated pollution, and scarcity. Several streams, before making its way to a resevior, pass through various metal working sectors, thereby causing problems of contaminated oil-water. Exploring alternatives to these conditions and processes, the student will focus much of their studies on the Suame Magaziu, a stream in central Kumasi.

A student choosing this project should feel comfortable using chemical instruments and recording gas and other such measurements in the field. Oil components will be studied in the lab, as various forms of pollution management accompany this research.

Among several other questions, the student could explore the following:

• How clean is Kumasi's water? Where are the most polluted areas and forms of water?
• Are digging wells a solution to water quality conditions?
• Is there enough water? How could more be procured? How could one assure the cleanliness of new sources?
• How does the manufacturing sector contribute to contaminated water?
• What are the oil components found in the Suame Magaziu? What methods could be used to moderate this problem?
