Project: Urban Environmental Sanitation and Capacity Building

This project will have two major components: city sanitation conditions and land and building management. The student will explore how economic restructuring has directed management of land, land settlements, and home maintenance. Several local case studies will be performed in Accra, where the student will explore how individual communities use their scarce resources and manage their environments. Among several other areas of research, nutrition issues, waste management, and sanitation measures will be traced for evolving developments.

Research will feed into a dissertation and proposals for land development and a method to effectively use collected and observed data.

Among several other questions, the student could explore the following:

• Are their local initiatives for community capacity building and basic health maintenance?
• How do land issues affect health and sanitation within individual communities?
• What difference would education and improved forms of information transfer make in managing the environment?
• What do government and local authorities put most emphasis on in terms of environmental initiatives?
• How is garbage cleared from homes and individual communities?
