Project: Waste Management

A multi-dimensional project, this will offer an opportunity for the student to explore various waste management issues within Accra. The student will have the option to choose between focusing their studies on one or several of the following: urban slums, food hygiene, rodent control, housing and overcrowding issues, water supply and drainage patterns, as well as the conditions of toilet facilities. The student will work with all 6 sub-metropolitan districts, directors, and waste management departments in Accra. Extracting the prevalence of health education within each district, the student will conduct several different forms of research, including interviews and case studies.

Among several other questions, the following could be explored:

• How is health affected by various environmental problems? What are such environmental conditions?
• What intervention is being performed to reconstruct waste management within Accra? How would a developed country be more equipped to handle these conditions?
• What alternatives exist to the filth mounting in the streets of Accra?
• How can water be made portable to those who do not have pipelines in or near their homes?
• What are viable alternatives for toilet disposal? How can toilet facilities be made more accessible in areas with schools and markets?
• How can food hygiene be improved? How can food be made more wholesome, especially to schoolchildren, given the current resources?
