ENGR 64. Solid and Hazardous Waste Management

 (special course offering for Spring 2002 only)

Solid waste characteristic and composition. Collection methods and segregation; waste recycling; resource conservation and recovery. Hazardous waste characteristics. Disposal by landfilling; biochemical processes within landfill; landfill design and operation; landfill gas generation, leachate management including control, recycling, and treatment; landfill reclamation. Waste incineration including hazardous waste incineration and air pollution control. . Aerobic and anaerobic waste processing; sludge utilization. Integration of waste management with wastewater sludge management.  Hazardous waste treatment technologies. Brownfields and soil remedation including chemical and biological methods. Groundwater contamination and remedation including oil and toxic organics.  Includes Laboratory.

 Prerequisite: Chemistry 10, Math 6 or permission of instructor.
