Education

PhD Bioengineering, 1989, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, Capabilities of Microwave Radiometry for the Detection of Subcutaneous Targets.

MSE Bioengineering, 1984, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA.

BS Engineering, 1982, Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA.

Experience

1986-present Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in the Department of Engineering at Swarthmore College. I have taught a wide variety of courses including electric circuits, linear systems, control theory, digital signal processing, microprocessor design, and electronics (analog and digital). Involved students in my ongoing research.

1990 Research at the Unisys Paoli Research Center. Studied techniques for comparing extremely long sequences of DNA.

1984-1988 Developed and sold hardware and software for control, data acquisition and subsequent analysis of laser fluorescence photo-bleaching experiments.

1983-1988 Dissertation research on medical applications of microwave radiometry. Specifically studying the resolution obtainable with radiometry for detection of breast cancer.

Current Research interests

Instrumentation and measurement of thermal and electrical properties of tissue, modeling of biological systems, biological signal processing and biosequence analysis, neural networks for control and pattern recognition, calculation and measurement of antenna field patterns, and non-invasive optical measurement of percentage oxygen saturation of hemoglobin.

I am familiar with several computer languages (C, C++, BASIC, FORTRAN, Java, assembly language for many Intel, Motorola, TI and PIC processors). I am also proficient in the use of Matlab (especially for controls and signal processing). Much of my research involves the design and construction of analog and digital electronics. I have done significant development with Motorola's 6811 processor.
