Student Comments:

Chris is a great teacher and I hope I get him for 116. I don't like how a big part of our grades are determined by other people in our homework groups. I think that the grading should somehow be revised. The class was fun and interesting.

Chris really improved his teaching from the beginningof the year and went from being obnoxious to very helpful in and out of class.

[Chris comments: Once again, I noticed a great improvement in the class after midsemester evaluations. I really didn't change my attitude or style, but perhaps this student got used to my sense of humor.]

Note: Several of the students in this class were grad students from other (non-math) departments. This is partially why the workload was rated so low. Also, I graded the midterm quite harshly for grad students, which I believe is reflected in the "grades fairly determined" question. Please remember, they had not received the final grades when the questionnaire was filled out.

Student Comments:

Instruction was very good. Homework was brutal.

Wow! Chris is a great teacher! He's interested in the subject, and he's interested in teaching. Bravo!

Too much time in class spent going over proofs that are clearer and quicker to read from book. Instructor should heighten our understanding af the material, not just present proofs. Book is a poor choice.

[Note: Please remember, I'm including all evaluations. I think this is the most negative one I've written up so far.]

This is an excellent course, but a better textbook would help. Lessons were interesting.

Chris Towse is an excellent instructor. He was always full of enthusiasm, and was extremely helpful in class and in his office. I appreciated his teaching style, for I feel that many professors do not enjoy teaching as much as he does. I would strongly recommend Chris for more upper-level courses (how about 512 in Winter '96?)

[Note: 512 is Abstract Algebra. And remember "Winter"="Spring" at UM.]

The instruction was very good. The grading seems very harsh, especially homework grading.

Prof. Towse is an extremely good teacher. He conveys the material very well. Undoubtedly he is the best math instructor I have had. Keep letting him teach upper level math!

Excellent course, but the grader was pretty anal, and the homework was pretty long. It would've been better if the grader hadn't expected totally obvious steps to be written out.

Overall a very interesting and enjoyable class. Thank you.
