Student Comments:

Overall I believe Chris Towse is a wonderful instructor. The best part is that he cares about his students. This is a quality few professors display.

The instructor made it very easy for students to ask questions and acknowledged their difficulties w/ material.

I thought that this course was difficult, but not exceedingly so. Someof the questions on the second exam were very difficult to answer and covered material much more abstractly than what was discussed in class. I think Chris was an excellent teacher and did a very good job teaching this course. His style is much different than other math teachers' and it took some getting used to - but it was worth it. Overall, i am very glad that I took this course.

The instructor of thsi course is good. The teacher clearly explains the material. The textbook is also valuable, but it goes very in depth into some material and at times can be confusing to understand everything it talks about.

Chris did an excellent job. We could tell that he put a lot of time into prparing for the class and anticipating our needs/problems. He was always willing to help and I really appreciated that!!

New Wave beats the s**t out of regular math. It's kind of like my former high school class. Group work is cool.

[Note: "New Wave" refers to the "reformed" calculus introduced at UM the semester before this one. Also, this is not that typical an attitude toward the group work!]

I want Chris to teach 215 next semester, and 216 the following one.

He's a great teacher! It's too bad he's not teaching 215 next year.

He is an extrememly good teacher.

Chris was an excellent teacher, but sometimes he grades too picky. But overall I enjoyed him as a teacher.

Chris is really cool (nice shoes) and he made the class fun. The material was hard. Group homework bites. i hate it so much. The load for the groups was a bit heavy. Other than that, all was cool.

I enjoyed the course and working on homework in groups. The instructor was a pretty cool guy who seemed to know what he was doing. It was a fun educational class.

In the beginning weeks of the course Chris was very intimidating. It was hard to ask quesitons and the course was very frustrating for me and many of my classmates. After midterm evaluations he really changed. He became much more personable and, I feel, became a better instructor.

[Chris comments: I highly recommend midsemester evaluations. The students felt much more empowered (to use a horribly loaded phrase) due to them. I did not adjust my teaching, but they opened up a lot.]

The instructor was fine but I had a HUGE problem with the grading. Example: our first quiz I got all the problems right and showed at least 1/2 of my work. Granted I should have points taken off, but he gave me 4 out of 10. Should I fail because I knew how to do it? This continued throughout the course. Overall it was okay.

I was a little apprehensive about taking "new wave" again, but I'm glad I made the decision to take New Wave 116. My instructor Chris does a great job of presentiong the material. Ireally can see the practical application of calculus. I did not particularly like New Wave 115, but New Wave 116 was very interesting and a valuable course.

1) Very effective instructor -presents material effectively -uses interesting examples -is energetic about subject material. 2) Very approachable -willing to meet at non-standard times -office hours are convenient. 3) Hair is too long. 4) Signature is way too squiggly.

Chris is an excellent teacher! He really knows his math and makes sure everyone understands what's going on. I do think he's too picky and often stingy on points, though.

Chris knew the material well, but seemed to have a difficult time going slow if people were confused.

[Note: See, I'm not only picking the good ones! I swear!!]

Chris does a good job of explaining stuff and he knows what he's doing. He tends to be a little too abrasive and unsupportive. I suppose it's a testament to his teaching that I elected to have him for a second semester of math.

Chris is one of the most knowledgable and prepared teachers I've every had. I appreciated his thoroughness and desire to keep the class moving forward - he didn't wast time like a lot of teachers tend to do.

I like New Wave.
