Anti-plagiarism blurb of the Biology Department
This document is included in the laboratory manuals of Biology 1 and 2 (the freshman introductory courses) and on these courses' Blackboard sites. Plagiarism policies are discussed (in a laboratory section) prior to the first writing assignment. This blurb is also being modified for inclusion in the Biology Majors Handbook, and is available on many Biology course web sites and Blackboard sites. So, if you have a student who has taken Bio 1 or Bio 2, they have been informed of the college's expectations about honesty in written work.
English Literature Department
This verbiage is online so that all courses in the department can easily link to it.
History Department
All faculty in this department distribute this document (Word file) for their courses. This document is a good example because it contains "positive" instructions on how to properly attribute sources in addition to specifying the consequences of ignoring these instructions. History is one of those rare fields in which the national professional organization (American Historical Association) has come forth with suggested verbiage and conducts its own "trials" to root out plagiarism in its faculty ranks.
Steve O'Connell's "Referencing source material . . ."
This is a great document because he explains when citations are either "required" or "optional but good idea."
Have a good syllabus you'd like to share??
If you have blurbiage on plagiarism that is effective, please send me the document (URL, *.doc, ".pdf) so that it can be shared with other faculty who are interested in revising their syllabi. I am particularly interested in obtaining syllabi that are only available on Blackboard sites or on faculty hard drives.
