"Cheating in academic institutions: a decade of research"
Donald McCabe has done decades of research on why students plagiarize and what institutions can do about it. This article is a good review of internal predicators (GPA, SAT, gender, athletic activities, etc.) and institutional predictors (Honor codes, etc.)

"A campus fad that's being copied: internet plagiarism"
New York Times article (September 2003) that describes the obvious connection between Internet resources and the rise in plagiarism.

"Lessons in internet plagiarism"
Another New York Times (June 2001) article that describes how plagiarism is learned in high school.

"Plagiarism in colleges in USA" (Rondald Standler)
Fabulous web site written by an attorney.

Annotated articles and sites on plagiarism (Sharon Stoerger)
This is another wonderful resource if you're interested in plagiarism resources.

"College students and academic dishonesty" (Pino and Smith 2003)
Details the "risk factors" associated with propensity to plagiarize.

The Center for Academic Integrity
This site has many good links. In particular, its members are devoted to addressing change at the institutional level. Swarthmore College is not a member, however, so I'm not exactly sure what they really do.

Colby/Bates/Bowdoin Plagiarism Resource Site
This is probably the best site out there. Michael Hanrahan is the motivated person behind the project.

Sampling of depressing plagiarism statistics (from Plagiarism.org)
My favorite: "A study conducted by Donald L. McCabe titled Faculty Responses to Academic Dishonesty: The Influence of Honor Codes found that 55% of faculty 'would not be willing to devote any real effort to documenting suspected incidents of student cheating'."

"Technology exposes cheating at U-Va" (Washington Post, May 2001)
In a class of 500, 122 papers were found to contain plagiarized passages.
