Science Literacy Month (for Kids)
|
![]() |
Help spread understanding of science among kids by celebrating some important theories in biology and astronomy.
"Big Bang" Day (Coming Feb 1, 2007)
Darwin Day (Feb 12th)
Heliocentrism Day (Feb 17th)
Origin of Life Day (Feb 18th)
Round Earth Day (Feb 22, '06; Feb 13, '07)
Why?
Well, because we are currently scientifically illiterate. For example, "...in 2001, only about 50 percent of ... survey respondents knew that the earliest humans did not live at the same time as dinosaurs, that it takes Earth one year to go around the Sun, that electrons are smaller than atoms, and that antibiotics do not kill viruses" (from a National Science Foundation survey). And 25% of Americans believe that the Sun goes around the Earth (NSF data). Folks, it's time to do something about scientific illiteracy, especially the rise of ignorance as virtue. Changing adults is hopeless, so let's focus on kids in elementary school.
