over a border dispute, exchanged Friendly Addresses which invoked their common
ancestry and urged women to use what influence they possessed for peace.
Friendly Addresses were inspired by Joseph Crosfield, an English Quaker, and
Elihu Burritt, an American, to promote friendship between the United States and
Great Britain on a person-to-person level. The American reply was signed by
Lucretia Mott.

As societies emerge from oppression, war, or genocide, their most important task

governance. More and more conflict-torn countries throughout the world are
promoting reconciliation as central to their new social order as they move
toward peace and stability. . . Reconciliation in Divided Societies shows us how
this transformation happens so that we can all gain a better understanding of
how, and why, reconciliation actually works.--From the publisher's description.

later. In this book, he profiles Cliff Kindy of the Christian Peacemaker Teams;
Kathy Kelly of Voices in the Wilderness; and other peace activists, soldiers,
journalists, and ordinary Iraqis he met during his two extended visits to what
became known as the Red Zone, the area outside the protected Green Zone enclave.
He provides a rare inside look into the daily life of Iraqis before and after

ISBN: 0873388399 (pbk. : alk. paper).
ISBN: 9780873388399 (pbk. : alk. paper).
An unpredictable financier, pacifist and industrialist, Cyrus Eaton invested widely,
earned millions, lost it all during the Depression, and then regained his
fortune after World War II. He earned a reputation as a "steel-tough man of
finance" and was the target of abuse from those who claimed his manipulations
had caused them financial damage. Marcus Gleisser's updated biography of
Eaton brings into focus many events in the life of this controversial figure:
his strong support of labor; his friendships with John L. Lewis, Fidel Castro,
Nikita Khrushchev, and other leaders of the former USSR; and his interest and
participation in the American political arena, especially his campaign for peace
that culminated in the Nobel Prizewinning Pugwash Conference.--Publisher's

This dissertation argues that Quaker opposition to the Vietnam War, while

Thesis (M.A.)-- Binghamton University, State University of New York, 2005.
"War can be justified when it is conducted between soldiers, who are
professionally contracted mercenaries of the state and there is only a
marginally damaging effect on the environment. However, in the modern context,
war is not justified because of the scale of destruction which is implicit in
the use of weapons of mass destruction."--From the author's abstract.

JEANNETTE RANKIN : A POLITICAL WOMAN / JAMES J. LOPACH, JEAN A. LUCKOWSKI.
Boulder : University Press of Colorado, c2005.
ISBN: 0870818120 (hardcover : alk. paper).
" Jeannette Rankin stands tall among American icons. The representative from
Montana won her seat at a time when women didn't have the right to vote in most
states. Her firm stances inspired both admiration and fury across party lines,
and she gained nearly canonical status among feminists and pacifists. In
Jeannette Rankin: A Political Woman, University of Montana professors James
Lopach and Jean Luckowski demythologize Rankin, showing her to be a talented and
driven but deeply divided woman." "Until now, no biography has explored Rankin's
inconsistencies. The authors consulted the correspondence of her family members
and contemporaries, uncovering ties between her politics and her familial and
personal relationships. They reveal how she succeeded through her wealthy
brother's influence as well as her own extraordinary efforts; how she drew
inspiration not from her rural roots but from the radical hotbed of Greenwich
Village; and how she championed an independent, woman-centered life while
deferring to family."--Book jacket.

WORLD WAR I NARRATIVES AND THE AMERICAN PEACE MOVEMENT, 1920-1936.
Thesis (Ph. D.)-- Florida State University, 2005.
This thesis conducts an analysis of twelve American novels and one short story
collection, all published between 1920 and 1936, and discusses their relevance
in relation to the pacifist/isolationist movement of the period between World
War I and World War II. Specifically, it demonstrates that these fictional works,
written in the main by World War I veterans (either military or in the ambulance
corps), had a profound influence on public sentiment during the course of the
1920s and through that influence were able to indirectly shape foreign policy. -

A MARGINALIZED VOICE FOR RACIAL JUSTICE : CHARLOTTA BASS AND OPPOSITIONAL POLITICS, 1914-1960. 2005.
Thesis (Ph. D.)-- University of California, Santa Barbara, 2005.
"This dissertation examines the life of Charlotta Bass, grass-roots journalist
and vice-presidential candidate. In focusing upon this little known figure, the
study views "high politics" through Bass's eyes by examining the ways in which
gender and race constructed political power and marginality. Female, black, and
radical -- the ultimate outsider -- Bass situated herself at the intersection of
the most contested issues of the twentieth century: civil rights, economic
justice, feminism, colonialism, and peace."--From the author's abstract.

WOMEN AND CONFLICT : LESSONS LEARNED AND APPLICATIONS FOR THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT.
Thesis (M.A.)-- University of Massachusetts, Lowell, 2005.
Women and Conflict analyzes the role of women in conflicts around the world and argues
in favor of women's increased inclusion in matters of peace and development. It
draws from diverse conflicts such as Northern Ireland and Rwanda to demonstrate
women's particular ability to cross conflict lines, their commitment to
collective processes, and their tendency to focus on issues relating to human
security in addition to traditional security. In particular, it analyzes the
role women have played in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and recommends
strategies for their full inclusion in formal and informal peace processes.--From the author's abstract.
