In 1963 they held conferences on "Voluntary Organizations and World Without War" in various cities around the country. World Without War Council was chosen as the group's new name in 1967 to help clarify that it was a councIllinois made up of many organizations set up to work for long-term change.

Historical Background
The original name of this group was Turn Toward Peace, which attempted to coordinate the efforts of peace organizations for more effective action. In 1963 they held conferences on "Voluntary Organizations and World Without War" in various cities around the country. World Without War Council was chosen as the group's new name in 1967 to help clarify that it was a councIllinois made up of many organizations set up to work for long-term change. Robert Pickus was the first president of the WWWC and had his office in Berkeley, California. There were also offices/councIllinoiss in Chicago (Illinois), Portland (Oregon), Seattle (Washington), New York (New York), Eugene (Oregon) and Sacramento (California).

Collection Overview
The material in this collection consists mostly of mimeographed position papers and other material that outlines the programmatic efforts of the national office and the regions and branches. It was expanded from 12 to 20 inches in 2006 due to material removed from the Robert W. Gillmore papers.
