Historical Background
The Center for Nonviolent Conflict Resolution was created at Haverford College, Pennsylvania, in 1968. They applied for a three year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health for a "social-psychological analysis of nonviolent direct actions." By Fall 1970 the project was broadened to include the analysis of nonviolent lifestyles, the response of universities to campus violence, and nonviolent revolutions. The Center aimed to represent the concerns of Haverford College in researching nonviolent conflict resolution and putting the results in a form that would be useful to activist organizations.
