Abstract
Charles Bloomstein (1913 - 2002) was involved in a number of organizations that promoted civil rights, as well as peace, including CARE, the NAACP, the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the War Resisters League, the Albert Einstein Institution, and the Mertz Gilmore Foundation. He hoped to write books about CARE and about his close friend and colleague, Bayard Rustin; unfortunately these works were never published. Historical Background
Charles Bloomstein (August 4, 1913 - October 28, 2002) was involved in a number of organizations that promoted civil rights, as well as peace, including CARE (as a staff person from 1948-1955), the NAACP, the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the War Resisters League, the Albert Einstein Institution, and the Mertz Gilmore Foundation (as director). He hoped to write books about CARE and about his close friend and colleague, Bayard Rustin, and this is reflected in his papers; unfortunately these works were never published. Bloomstein was a conscientious objector during World War II, and took part in Civilian Public Service (CPS) from June 1943 to June 1946. He was in CPS camps #46 (Big Flats, New York) and #59 (Elkton, Oregon), and also served as a human guinea pig, in medical experiments regarding malaria, at unit #115 (Boston, Massachusetts).

More material about or by Bloomstein can be found in the New York Public Library's archival collection on CARE.
