Biographical / Historical

The Byberry Friends Association was a Quaker group which met monthly in Byberry, Pennsylvania, to hear papers on a variety of topics and to discuss issues of the day.

The Byberry Friends Association was founded in 1900 in the belief that “a thorough knowledge of the history and testimonies of the Religious Society of Friends is essential to an active interest and participation in its affairs.” Although it was structured like a Young Friends Association, Arabella Carter, its first Chairwoman, felt that the use of the word “young” in the name of the Association would limit participation by older Friends.

Dues paying members met monthly to hear papers on a variety of subjects and to discuss vital issues of the day. In the beginning, the primarily Quaker membership was large enough to meet in the Byberry Friends Meeting House, but later meetings were held in private homes.
