This page offers some 'quick & dirty' information on getting citations from some of the more heavily used Science databases into Endnote. For more information on using Endnote, visit the Using Endnote help page - on this page you will find information for:

Cite While You Write - allows you to cite a reference and automatically generate a bibliography without leaving Word.

Creating a Standalone Bibliography

Web of Science & Endnote

* Return to search screen and check the boxes next to the citations you want to keep.

* Click on the SELECT MARKS box in the upper left corner of the screen.

* Select SUBMIT, SELECTED RECORDS in the box on the right hand side of the screen.

* On this screen, select the MARKED LIST box at the top of the screen. This will take you to a “Web of Science Marked Records” screen. Scroll down to see the marked records.

* Open Endnote.  A “Get started with Endnote 6” window will open.

* Create and name a new Endnote library, or select an existing one.

* Back in Web of Science, select the Export to Reference Software button.

* Information will download automatically, and an “Open an Endnote Library” window will open. Select the Endnote library you want to download records to and the marked records will go into that window!

ENDNOTE & Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (Life Sciences)

* Save/Print/Email records.

* Save: file format. Choose PC/Mac.

* Plain text web page will come up – Under FILE, select ‘SAVE AS’, and name the file, with txt or doc suffix.

* Open Endnote and select an existing library, or create & name a new one.

* Under FILE, select Import.

* Locate and select document with references to import.

* Under ‘Import Options’, select Biological Sci (CSA), then select the IMPORT button.

* Citations will go into the open Endnote Library!

ENDNOTE & PubMed

* Click the box next to the citations you want to save.

*  Change the pull-down menu next to the “Display” button  to MEDLINE.

* Change the pull-down menu next to the “Send To” button to File.

* Click on the “Send To” button.

* The citation file is named “query.fcgi” by default. Rename this file with a txt ending.

* Click on “Save”.

* Open Endnote. Create a new library or open an existing library.

* Choose “Import” from the File menu bar.

* Click on “Choose File” and find the Pubmed file you have just saved.

* From the pull-down menu next to “Import Option”, select PubMed NLM.

* Click the “Import” button, and the citations will download to that Endnote Library.

INSPEC & Endnote

* Check the boxes next to the citations you want to keep.

* Select Show MARKED records from the drop down menu.

* Click on the floppy disk icon.

* On next screen,  Save COMPLETE RECORD. Click SAVE.

* A text file will open in a new screen – save it to your desktop with an appropriate name.

* Go to Endnote. Open existing library or create new one.

*  Under FILE, select IMPORT.

* CHOOSE FILE: Locate file name

* IMPORT OPTIONS: Choose INSPEC.

* Select IMPORT, and records will download to open Endnote Library.

ADS & Endnote

* After you have marked & retrieved the records you want to keep, select ENDNOTE from the drop down menu under “Retrieve the above records in other formats or sort order” and “Load into Endnote”

* Select RETRIEVE SELECTED RECORDS

* An OPEN AN ENDNOTE LIBRARY window should open – select the endnote library you want and select OPEN.

* The citations should download into Endnote Library!

Scitation & Endnote

* Scitation doesn’t need a filter, so importing to Endnote is fairly easy!

* Select citations you want to keep.

* From drop-down box “Select Article(s), then…”, select “Download citations in Endnote”

* Select GO.

* A window will open, asking you to OPEN AN ENDNOTE LIBRARY.

* Select the Library, select OPEN, and the citations will automatically get dumped into the open Endnote Library.

MathSciNet & Endnote

* MathSciNet doesn’t need a filter, so importing to Endnote is fairly easy!

* Select citations you want to keep.

* From drop-down box, select “Citations (Endnote)

* Select RETRIEVE MARKED.

* You will then get an odd-looking text screen. Select “Save As…” under FILE, and name file, with ‘doc’ or ‘txt’ to desktop.

* Open Endnote, create new, or select existing library.

* Select IMPORT under FILE…

* Import Options = ENDNOTE IMPORT

* Find file to import, select IMPORT, and documents will go directly into library!!

SciFinder Scholar & Endnote

* Conduct your search in SciFinder Scholar.

* Save your records.

* Click on SAVE button.

* Select Tagged format from the Save as type: pull-down menu.

* Type your disk drive and filename plus extension .txt in the FILE NAME box.

* Click on OK.

* Open EndNote.

* Open an EndNote library.

* Click on FILE and IMPORT.

* Click on CHOOSE FILE to choose your downloaded SciFinder Scholar record file.

* Click on OPEN

* At the IMPORT OPTION box select OTHER FILTERS.

* Select the SciFinder(CAS) filter.

* Click on CHOOSE.         

* Click on IMPORT
