English 7 / Course Description

We will study a wide variety of works portraying artists in different cultures and contexts and media. Writers will probably include Sophocles, Salman Rushdie, Italo Calvino, Eudora Welty, David Bradley, Thulani Davis, and August Wilson. The syllabus may also contain vidoes by or about African griots, Maya Lin, Glenn Gould, and the independent filmmakers Maya Deren, Rea Tajiri, Bertrand Tavernier, and Ed Wood, Jr. (Final decisions about the syllabus will be made this summer, but the above materials give a good guideline of the general topics.)
