PRIVATE LESSONS FOR BEGINNERS

The Gilmore and Mary Stott Scholarship will pay 50% of the cost of 10 30-minute private lessons on any instrument to any student enrolled in Music 2 (How to Read Music). Students with financial need are encouraged to apply for supplemental funding, up to and including 100%. Stott Scholarships are normally given in the fall semester, concurrent with Music 2, but may be renewed for up to two subsequent semesters provided that the student concurrently enrolls in any academic Music course. Renewal of a Stott Scholarship is contingent upon a positive evaluation by the private teacher; we also ask that Stott Scholars demonstrate their proficiency at the end of each semester in a one-on-one meeting with the Chair of the Department or with another member of the music faculty. It is our expectation that, after two or three semesters on Stott Scholarships, a student will become sufficiently advanced to join the regular Music 48 program.

Another option: students who can already read music and who are interested in learning to play the piano are encouraged to enroll in Music 11 (Harmony and Counterpoint I). The Department provides a free weekly piano lesson to any student who enrolls in Music 11.

No academic credit is available for private lessons at the beginning level.
