Audition Information for Fall 2011:

Preliminary Assessments for Music 48 will take place on Friday September 2nd, 12:30– 4:00 PM in the Lang Concert Hall. Please sign-up for a specific appointment on the Department Bulletin board, top level of the Lang Music Building, opposite the Department Office. (Please note: these auditions are normally required in addition to the separate auditions for Department Ensembles listed below.) You will be asked to play a five-minute excerpt from your repertoire with an accompanist provided by the Department (unless your work is an unaccompanied solo). Bring the accompaniment with you to school.

Orchestra - Please sign up for an audition time on the Orchestra bulletin board on the 4th level of the Lang Music Building (opposite the department office). Please come with a 2-minute excerpt of any piece that you feel comfortable playing; you may also be asked to sight-read a short passage, though sight-reading is not a prerequisite for playing in orchestra! Auditions will be held throughout the morning and afternoon on Monday, August 29th - the first day of classes.

Chorus - Please sign up for an audition time on the Chorus bulletin board on the 4th level of the Lang Music Building (opposite the department office). The audition consists of simple sight-singing and vocalizing. No prepared piece is necessary. Auditions will be held on Monday, August 29th from 7:00 - 10:00 PM in the Lang Music Building, #415.

Wind Ensemble - Please see the Wind Ensemble bulletin board on the 4th level of the Lang Music Building (opposite the department office) for a sign-up sheet and location of the auditions. Auditions are for placement only; everyone is welcome and encouraged to play! Auditions will be held throughout the afternoon and early evening, immediately prior to the first rehearsal on Monday, August 29th (the first day of classes).
- Jazz Ensemble - The first rehearsal and placement auditions will be held on Thursday, September 1st, 7:00 - 10:00 PM in the Lang Concert Hall . Auditioning students are encouraged to prepare a short jazz excerpt. Please see the Jazz bulletin board on the 4th level of the Lang Music Building for sign-ups and other details. - Balinese Gamelan - Gamelan Semara Santi performs traditional compositions for Balinese Gamelan (Indonesian percussion orchestra). Rehearsals are Mondays 4:30-6:30 PM and Fridays 2:00 - 3:00 PM in Lang 410. There will be four additional Sunday afternoon sessions, dates TBA. There are no auditions; any student who wishes to play in the ensemble is welcome to join. No prior musical experience is needed; just come to the first rehearsal, Monday, 8/29, 4:30 - 6:30 PM in Lang 410. If you are interested in performing as a dancer with the Gamelan, please email Tom Whitman (twhitma1@swarthmore.edu) and include information about your prior training and experience in dance.
- Chamber Music - Auditions will take place on Friday, September 2nd, in the Lang Concert Hall, following the MU48/Lessons for Credit auditions. Please note: If you are auditioning for MU48/Lessons for Credit, you do not have to audition separately for the Fetter Program. Indicate your interest in participating in chamber music on the MU48 sign-up sheet. If auditioning for Chamber Music only, sign-up for a specific audition time on the Department Bulletin board on the top level of the Lang Music Building (opposite the Department Office). You will be asked to play a five-minute excerpt from your repertoire with an accompanist provided by the Department (unless your work is an unaccompanied solo).
