  • SPANISH LANGUAGE TABLE Sharples Dining Hall, Rm. 6 Wednesdays at 12:30 PM

Come delight in a fantastic feast of knowledge at Swarthmore! When you study Spanish, you will learn all about the most diverse and fascinating cultures, literatures, art, music, history, and politics from the vast and growing Spanish-speaking world: from Spain’s multicultural and multilingual regions to Latin America’s multifaceted cultural roots that embrace both the indigenous and African cultural heritage.

In the humanistic spirit of the liberal arts, the Spanish Section invites and strongly encourages all students to pursue the broadest, most varied, and most enriching course of study in the language, literatures, cultures, and history of both Spain and Latin America. Modeling itself on the richly rewarding tradition of the liberal arts, the Spanish Section fully expects all students who elect to major or minor in Spanish to take advanced courses in both Spanish (Peninsular) and Latin American literatures and cultures, therefore covering all of its historical periods and literary genres. A balanced and broad-based liberal arts major in Spanish should include courses from the following historical periods: pre-1700 Peninsular literature; modern Peninsular literature; and modern Latin American literature. The major in Spanish emphasizes breadth and the pursuit of interdisciplinary studies without sacrificing depth.
