The French section provides introductory and advanced coursework in language, culture and literature, including a three-semester language sequence. Courses in translation and advanced coursework done in French examine important periods and principal figures of literature written in French; French cultural and critical theory; and French and Francophone film covering the diversity of French-speaking cultures. For the advanced courses in French, students are expected to have sufficient oral and written skills in French to meet all class requirements.

Francophone studies explore areas and peoples significantly influenced by and participant in Francophone cultures throughout the world: Africa, the Americas, Europe and Southeast Asia. It takes a broad view of cultural achievements and thus examines cultural diversity and identity of all communities. Through the study of an important transnational culture with the French language at its center, it is our hope that students will be better able to participate in our increasingly globalized world.

All majors and minors are encouraged to spend at least one semester abroad in our program at the Université Stendhal in Grenoble, France.

Studying a foreign language opens us up to understanding cultures, not only the ones which we study, but also our own.
