Please join me and other snails for a leisurely walk on Ritner Street in South Philadelphia, home of interesting family-run Italian food stores. We will visit Dad's Stuffings (also known as John's Market) on 1615 Ritner Street, where you can find a dizzying array of freshly stuffed meats, from veal chops to lumpy crab cakes. Only a few yards away, you find the freshly made sausages of Cannuli's (1640 Ritner) and a wide selection of Italian style pastries at Potito's Bakery (1614 Ritner). Potito's delightful Sfogliatelle were a good reminder of that Neapolitan treat (alas not the their Rum Baba). Cacia's Bakery on 1526 Ritner offers freshly baked breads and rolls. On the other side of Broad Street, at 12th and Ritner, we will visit Matteo's where the mozzarella and potato gnocchi are made that morning. Afterwards, we will have lunch at Bomb Bomb Italian Restaurant and Bar-B-Que Grill on 1026 Wolf Street (only a couple of blocks away from Matteo's). I know the name of the restaurant does not make for easy conversation in the airport security line, but the Barbatos have nicely agreed to open their place on a Saturday noon for us and to cook many of their specialties for our family-style luncheon. The price of the meal is $20.00, excluding alcoholic beverages and tax and tip. The Ritner Street walk and shop outing will take place on Saturday, October 22nd, from 10:00 to until the lunch is over. The event is free for everyone, except the price for the lunch. Please e-mail me if you want to participate in this outing on Saturday, October 22nd, and specify whether you can join the group for lunch at Bomb Bomb. Should be fun. In case you are planning to be at the American Oktoberfest at Nectar this coming Sunday evening, please make your reservations now at 610 725-9000. You can sample some of the best products of our area in chef Patrick Feury's recipes. For more details, see the webapage. I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming days. Cheers, Hansjakob |
