June 2nd, 2009

Dear members and friends of Slow Food Philadelphia,

What better way to celebrate the late spring bounty of local farms than with a special Slow Food dinner at the “three bells” restaurant Alba. Sean Weinberg has shown that a commitment to sustainable local food sources can result in superior quality of products and great-tasting food. The proof is yours to taste in the delightful Sardinian dinner Sean will cook for us on Sunday, June 14, 6:00 p.m. Here the menu:

For those who love Sardinian wines, Kelly is offering four different selections of Sardinian wines for $18 (less than half the usual price by glass).

Please make your reservations by calling 610-644-4009. When you make the reservation, please identify yourself as a slow food member in order to get the $53 menu price and $18 flight of Sardinian wines. As with past dinners, please send your check for the dinner (+ tax and gratuity) and, if applicable, the wines, to:

A lovely day to spend a Saturday or Sunday is to visit one of our beautiful farms and throughout summer and into fall, Slow Food Philadelphia will introduce you to area farms and their products. Our first visit will be to Blackbird Heritage Farm in Townsend, DE where Andy and Sherri Roddick sell their Ark of Taste Heirloom lettuces and other organic products on Saturdays at the Head House Market in Philadelphia.
We’ll have a picnic at the farm and the opportunity to learn first-hand about sustainable agriculture and the many line-up of Heirloom vegetables, herbs, and flowers. When Sherri has set the date, you will receive all the information.

I want to thank everyone who made the pig roast at Philadelphia Brewing Company such a success. It was a splendid day for sitting in the brewery’s courtyard and for enjoying the generously poured PBC beers, dishes made by Restaurant Rx, and the succulent pig. Special thanks goes, of course, to Nancy and Bill Barton whose generous support of Slow Food Philly is unequaled, and the great brewery crew.

Finally, thanks to the fabulous group of volunteers who came to the Memphis Tap Room for a discussion on projects and initiatives, both local and national, our chapter will endeavor in the near future. It was an overflowing crowd – literally, we had to flow out onto the streets of Fishtown – and I am grateful for all the ideas and help offered by this diverse and enthusiastic group. With You will hear from me this week about projects ready to go.

Enjoy the farmers markets and sign up for Community Supported Agriculture.

Cheers,

Hansjakob
