While most of the money we raise goes to local projects, Slow Food Philadelphia’s support for the first conference on responsible management of Lake Tanganyika’s resources (February 9-10, 2009 in Kalemie, Democratic Republic of Congo) was instrumental in making this conference a reality. If anyone is planning a trip to that region, please accept the invitation from Jean Pierre Kapalay, head of the Tanganyika Slow Food Convivium, to visit the lake area with members of Slow Food lumina_mabue@yahoo.fr

In the past ten years, our local Philadelphia chapter has grown to be a vibrant part of Slow Food USA with a strong commitment to community and the environment.  Philadelphia has many wonderful organizations with similar objectives and one of the most important goals for us is to become a more integrated part of those dedicated and diverse groups.  In order to do so, we will greatly expand the leadership committee of Slow Food Philadelphia – including a new head - and I am asking everyone who is interested to come to a meeting of volunteers in the last week of May.   The meeting will take place at Memphis Tap Room and the date is Wednesday, May  27, at 7:00 pm.  Please e-mail me if you think you can attend this meeting or if you are interested in holding a position with Slow Food Philadelphia.

This is the time when Farmers Markets are starting up all over the city and in many towns around Philadelphia.  Here is an article by Patrick Rapa from City Paper, entitled The Freshmakers. 2009 Philly Farmers Market Guide.  Enjoy the market in your neighborhood.

Farm to City Markets

Food Trust Markets

In collaboration with other organizations, we are currently in discussion about a wide variety of projects related to improving access to foods that are local, seasonal and sustainably grown.  We also continue to support farmers and artisans who grow, produce, market, prepare and serve wholesome food and celebrate their food as an important part of our culture and community.  If any of these issues are important to you, join us at the volunteer meeting on Wednesday, May 27.

Cheers,

Hansjakob
