For those of you who love a Saturday morning outing into the countryside, please remember that Thomas and Barbara Schaer extended an invitation to visit their beautiful farm for the annual Sheep Shearing event on Saturday, March 14, at 11:00 a.m. There will be fiber demonstrations with Artists from StillWater Fibers weaving and spinning farm products. As in previous years, Barbara’s amazing Lamb chili and the farm’s sheep cheeses will be available for tasting. Meadowset Farm also produces honey and grass-fed lamb. This free event is especially fun for children and will take place rain or shine. Please, do not bring any pets with you to the farm. The address is 210 North Creek Rd, Landenberg, PA 19350 , 610-274-8320. For more information on Meadowset Farm, please see

This coming Friday, March 13, at 7:30 pm, the Crum Creek Sustainable Community will show Deborah Koons Garcia’s excellent film The Future of Food at the Swarthmore Brorough Hall. The film examines issues like genetically modified foods, the globalization of the market place, and the consequences of industrialized food production. All are welcome.

I am very pleased that the Future of Lake Tanganyika conference in Kalemie, Democratic Republic of Congo, sponsored by the Philadelphia chapter of Slow Food, was a big success. Organized by our sister chapter in Kelemie under the leadership of Jean –Pierre Kapalay, the conference was attended by representatives of the various fishing organizations, the local university, as well as United Nations experts. The main topics of the meeting were sustainable fishing models and the protection of biodiversity for this immensely important resource. The event was reported by many local media outlets. Cheers,
Hansjakob
