November 7, 2008

Dear members and friends of Slow Food Philadelphia,

November is here.  Agriculturally, this means big changes for local farms.  Most of our regional farmers markets will be open until Thanksgiving, selling the late fall harvest – colorful chards, kales, and squashes, bright beets, potatoes, radishes and greens, and fragrant garlic and celeriac, just to mention a few of the goodies.  As for the change in Washington D.C., Michael Pollan, together with many of us, is hoping that there will be support for much needed changes in the way agriculture is supported in this country, new policies that support farmers, not corporations and protect consumers and the environment.  His open letter to the President-elect in the New York Times Magazine, “Farmer in Chief” is certainly worth reading.

Slow Food member and master sommelier Marco Avigo has done much to acquaint Philadelphia area wine drinkers with the incredible variety and quality of Italian wines.  A recent trip through important wine regions in Italy with enthusiastic Philly snails once again confirmed the richness and breadth of the wine culture there.  There are, of course, other countries with excellent wine traditions – none greater than France.  On Tuesday, November 18, we will celebrate the glory  of French wine with a dinner that will feature important wines across the growing regions of France – a treat for experts as well as novices of French wine.  Roberta Adamo has created a series of special dishes to accompany the wines and, as you can read below, it looks like a match made in heaven.
