A small group of
intrepid gastronauts will again set out
for the annual Slow Food Philadelphia
trip. This year, the trip will
begin in Trieste on Wednesday, October

This
coming October, a small
group of us will again be traveling in
Europe. This time, we will explore two
of Europe’s most famous wine (and
spirits) routes – La Route des
Vins D’Alsace (the wine road
of Alsace) and the Badische Weinstrasse
(the wine road of Baden), with visits
to the beautiful historic cities of Freiburg,
Breisgau, Staufen, Colmar, and Strasbourg.
The landscapes around Freiburg –
the Black Forest, the Kaiserstuhl mountain,
the undulating hills of the Markgräferland
vineyards - are among the most beautiful
in Germany and the wines produced here
rank among the best. The continuation
of the journey along the picturesque wine
villages of Alsace will afford us a unique
comparative perspective of these historically
connected lands.
As customary, the group will visit excellent
producers (winemaker, distillers) and
sample the regional cuisine with specially
arranged menus at some of the best restaurants
in France and Germany (according to
Gault Millau, Feinschmecker, and
Michelin) while staying in comfortable
and unique hotels. You
can read a detailed itinerary on our web
page.

La
Quercia, a small Iowa company determined
to produce a great US prosciutto –
and wildly succeeding. I first tasted
Herb and Cathy Eckhouse’s Prosciutto
Americano at a Slow Food event in Iowa
and was amazed by the quality. Now I found
out that Emilio Mignucci (DiBruno Brothers)
is selling several products from La Quercia.
The organic pancetta (with herbs), eaten
like lardo, is totally addictive (and
the US customs agents cannot take it away
from you!). |
