About the Picture

The picture above is a composite of several images and icons of Balkan culture. The mountains represent the Pirin Mountains of Bulgaria and Macedonia, which were a hold-out of rebels fighting against the Ottoman Turkish Empire in the 19th century. Many songs celebrate one of the leaders of this resistance, Jan Sandanski. The bridge is the famous "Star Most" (Old Bridge) in the town of the same name, Mostar. The bridge was destroyed during the ethnic wars which convulsed Bosnia-Hercegovina in the 1990's.

The picture is an original pen-and-ink drawing by Lily Storm, BMC '98, Slaveja's musical director for two years.
