Materials
In this course you will be working with the text book (Livre), the workbooks (Cahiers d'activités orales et écrites), and web pages that include grammar and vocabulary exercises, dialogues and external links. The homepage for the course is http://www.swarthmore.edu/Humanities/gmoskos1/working/home1b.htm
If you are in the lab, open in the "French folder" Netscape 4.7 in order to be able to do the exercises.
Your exercises from the "Cahiers d'activités orales et écrites" will be turned in as a packet on Friday of each week. After each class you should complete the written exercises pertaining to that day's material. You must be present in class to turn them in. No exercises sent through college mail, slipped under the door, or turned in later than Friday will be accepted. They will be corrected for Monday, the day before your quiz or exam.
Please note that the laboratory tapes (for the Cahier d'activités orales) are available in the lab and on the LRC site as streaming audio:
(http://www.swarthmore.edu/Humanities/langlab/audio/voila01.htm ). However this site does not allow you to repeat after the tape and record your own voice. For this reason it is important that you complete the lab exercises in the LRC with the traditional audio tapes. You should use the streaming audio site only for review. The site address will appear at the top of each week's syllabus.
The Audio CDs packaged with your textbook include a reading of the "Vocabulaire de base" for the week and a model conversation in French. You should review the pronunciation of the vocabulary on a regular basis.
Your computer grammar and vocabulary exercises are self-correcting for most of them. Some others will be sent to your professors at their email address. It is very important that you complete your exercises for the days indicated on the syllabus. Please do not try to complete computer assignments at the last possible moment. It is impossible to predict internet congestion, server crashes, and other acts of a sometimes less than benevolent deity. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
Course Progression
You will be given a syllabus on Tuesday. You can also access this syllabus on the Web. A normal week will proceed as follows:Tuesday: Quiz on preceding lesson and begin new lesson
Wednesday: Continue lesson
Thursday: Continue lesson
Friday: Review of week's work. You hand in your Cahier d'activités orales et écrites.
Monday: Activités libres (free-form activities intended for review), and oral quizzes or exams. You will have an exam after lessons 3, 6, and 9.
Evaluation Criteria
Language acquisition demands your active participation. 50% of your final grade will be based on the following:Attendance
Participation in classroom activities
Timely completion of laboratory and written assignments
Performance on quizzes
Lab utilization (one and one-half hours each week)
The other 50% of your final grade will be based on your performance on oral and written exams during the course of the semester, and on your final exam grade.
