Kinnord-Payton's immaculately crafted structures recall stupas, cathedrals, and shrines. Blending African, Asian, and European architecture with natural forms such as hips, caves, and womb-like forms, Kinnord-Payton speaks of celebrating “those places that serve as the containers of our birth, life, and passing." Kinnord-Payton takes inspiration from her extensive travels throughout northern Europe, Mexico, Ghana, China, and Japan. She is based in New Orleans and is Assistant Professor of Art at Xavier University.

Carmen Lomas Garza

List Gallery reception:
Friday, October 3, 2003 5:30-7:00 PM

Carmen Lomas Garza has won national acclaim for her compelling images of Chicano life. Elevated viewpoints, a mesmerizing wealth of detail, and a dynamic use of pattern and color enliven her seemingly straightforward compositions. Trained as an art educator as well as a painter, her works offer visual lessons in the mestizo nature of our nation's history. Winner of National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in both painting and printmaking, Garza was recently the subject of a traveling retrospective exhibition organized by the San Jose Art Museum. Garza has also had solo exhibitions at the Hirshhorn Museum; the Smithsonian Museum of American Art; the Mexican Museum, San Francisco; and the Whitney Museum of American Art at Phillip Morris, New York.
