The List Gallery Presents: Canopy Adventures, The Crum Woods Through Time, a multimedia exhibition and installation by Rebecca Rutstein.Exhibition runs November 12, 2004 - January 12, 2005The List Gallery at Swarthmore College is pleased to announce its forthcoming exhibition, Canopy Adventures, The Crum Woods Through Time. Rebecca Rutstein, a Philadelphia artist and 2004 Pew Fellowship winner, has transformed the gallery with a sound and sculpture installation and a mixed media geological timeline. Her new paintings and installation grow out of her career-long fascination with geology, maps, the changing natural world and her recent research on the history of the Crum Woods and watershed, a critical habitat and conservation area on the Swarthmore College campus. The opening reception will take place on Friday, November 12, 5-8 p.m. The artist will give a public lecture about her work on Thursday, November 18, 1:15 p.m in Beardsley Hall Room 318. List Gallery hours are Wednesdays 12-4 p.m.; Fridays 1-5 p.m.; Saturdays & Sundays 1-4 p.m.; and by appointment (610)328-8488. The exhibition will be on view during Thanksgiving weekend. The List Gallery will be closed December 24, 2004 - January 2, 2005. Rutstein brings to her Swarthmore installation a visual vocabulary of geological images that she has developed over the years including through residencies in Banff, Alberta in 2003 and 2004. In the past, her work has found a playful balance between abstract color planes, rhythmic linear patterns, and a suggestive array of personally resonant symbols. Topographic maps, uplifted geologic plates, and recurring images of a canopy bed, suggest a connection between the mutability of natural forces and the imagination. Rutstein received her M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and her B.F.A. from Cornell University. In addition to her residencies in Banff, she has been a resident fellow at the Vermont Studio Center. She has had two solo exhibitions at Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Philadelphia, where she is currently represented, and she has participated in numerous distinguished group exhibitions including a 2002 Fleisher Art Memorial Challenge Exhibition.
