Emily Brown

Emily Brown's recent large scale ink brush drawings are immediately captivating. They synthesize more than twenty years experience observing the natural world, particularly the Maine woods and coast. Her work displays her love of the patterns and rhythms of natural forms as well as her sensitivity to light and texture. Her List Gallery exhibition featured brush drawings on paper and linen from the past five years. A catalogue, with entries by Andrea Packard, Mark Rosenthal and Michael Malone is available.

Traditionally an oil painter, Brown has recently worked primarily in aqueous media. As the artist states, "ink and other aqueous materials, less controllable than oil, present thrills in the working. The near elimination of color has given tone and texture greater force." Brown's calligraphic strokes describe trees, rocks, and waves in a way that is both naturalistically rendered and rhythmically abstract. A recent Pew fellow in painting, Emily Brown received her BFA from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts. She has exhibited at such venues as Gallery Joe and FAN Gallery in Philadelphia and Kate Ganz USA Ltd, New York. She has lectured and taught at both the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts and the Graduate Program of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
