Biographical Statement :
For me, making art is about translating the visual world and challenging perceptions. My paintings come from my daily life and the images that surround me. My work examines the suburban landscape and, at times, that landscape becomes a vehicle for social commentary.
I find places that suggest a narrative, but which usually remain unnoticed: an alley between two homes, the side of a garage, the entry through an arbor. My interest lies not only in the content of the subject matter, but in the combination of shapes, the contrasts between straight and curved, and the relationship between architecture and nature. I alter the natural world by abstracting the scene, simplifying some areas and finding complexity in others.
As a teacher of art, I ask each student to begin the journey of learning a visual language. Through attentive exploration, each person starts to discover a personal vocabulary. Some students may spend time developing this artistic knowledge while others will simply become aware of its existence. In either case, I ask each student to become aware of his or her own artistic sensitivity.
