Faculty DevelopmentHandbook for Instructional StaffThe Faculty Handbook is provided in PDF format. If you do not have a PDF viewer you can download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader using the link at the bottom of the page. Faculty TravelThe College reimburses full-time members of the faculty in the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Instructor for a major part of the expenses incurred in attending meetings of learned or professional societies. The College thus encourages faculty members to take part in these professional meetings and, thereby to keep in touch with fellow scholars and with the most advanced thought in their individual fields. Full-time faculty members have an annual allowance of $1,300. For details on reimbursable expenses, extra reimbursement, and reimbursement procedures, please see the Handbook for Instructional Staff. Faculty Research Support Full-time and regular part-time members of the faculty (as defined
by the Faculty Handbook) may request up to a total of $1,000 (pro-rated
for part-time faculty) for the current academic year, to cover expenses
incurred in connection with a research project. A call for requests
will be issued early in the fall and spring semesters from the Provost's
Office; applications should be submitted at that time. Faculty Research Support Application F07 Second Semester Leave Support: Internal SourcesOpportunities for second semester leave support are detailed in a memo issued by the Provost during the fall semester. The memo includes information on grant availability, application requirements , and application deadlines. Candidates for College support must also have applied for external grants, and those deadlines come much earlier than the College deadlines. (See Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations*) for assistance with identifying and applying for external funds). Applications for College funds will normally be in late November or early December. For further information contact chunger1 at swarthmore dot edu. Procedures for preparation of dossiers for tenure, promotion, and reappointmentsEach year the provost sends to department chair a memo that outlines procedures for preparation of dossiers for the following personnel decisions: tenure, promotion, reappointment prior to tenure, other faculty reappointments, and regular part-time faculty reappointments.
