A. Planning Session(s) With The Foreign Study Coordinator
Please schedule a meeting with Rosa Bernard, Foreign Study
Coordinator, by early or mid-semester, prior to your departure. She will assist you with the in-house paper
work required of you, completion of which will enable this office to authorize Swarthmore College to make
payment on your behalf to your program. In addition, Rosa will work closely with you on, e.g., billing,
completing program forms, travel, obtaining the International Student ID card, where to obtain inoculation
information, insurance, your board and/or room arrangements while abroad (if this requires attention),
and any other preparation matters. Please make sure that you get this important work under way early. And,
please N.B., the Business Office will not authorize payment on your behalf to your program if you have
outstanding financial obligations to the College. If you have any questions about your Swarthmore account,
please see the Bursar.
If you need to be in touch with your program while preparing your application, following its submission, or following your acceptance, the Resource Room in the Office for Foreign Study has a phone and a fax machine, which you may use for these purposes. Please ask either Rosa Bernard or Diana Malick for assistance, regarding this.
B. Mail and E-Mail Forwarding
While you are abroad, the Swarthmore College Post Office will forward all of your first class mail to any U.S.
Address with which you provide it. Be sure as well to change the mailing address for all magazines, newspapers,
newsletters, and any other non-first class mail that you regularly receive. The Computing Center provides e-mail
forwarding, where possible. Please refer to the following link regarding email access while abroad: https://secure.swarthmore.edu/its/account_tools/accounts.htm. Also you can call the Help Desk at 610-328-4357 or help@swarthmore.edu.
C. Financial Aid
Financial aid is normally routinely applied to participation in Swarthmore's semester/year abroad program.
Any paper work that may be required for application of your financial aid to your study abroad will be taken
care of during your planning session(s) with Rosa Bernard.
D. Housing For Return Semester
Your Leave of Absence-Semester/Year Abroad form, included in the package of in-house paper work that you
will receive, will notify the Housing Office of your desire for College housing upon your return, if you
are so desirous; a provides a place for you to name your proxy for the housing lottery. Please direct questions
about this to Dean Myrt Westphal, Director of Residential Life.
