Val and Dan meet once a week for 3 hours.
Sometimes Val also does homework in between
their sessions. In their work, they use the
Harcourt G.E.D. kit, which was advertised in the
Sunday paper. Right now, they are focusing on
the Math section, especially percentages,
fractions, and ratios. Val already did the other
sections on her own, including English, Reading,
Social Studies, Geography, History. Val is
planning on taking the GED in September this
year. As a partnership, Val and Dan have been
working towards the GED goal since Spring of
last year. Once Val gets her GED, she wants to
start working with computers.
ADDITIONAL QUOTES:
Val: "It's great to have this
opportunity at work, and my supervisor has been
really patient and helpful."
Val: "It makes me feel good, that
someone's coming here to work with me. It shows
you that they're thinking about you too."
Val: "Some people [that work
here] are afraid it's gonna interfere with
their work. And some people are scared to ask
questions because they're afraid to look
dumb."
Val: "It took me awhile to reach out.
I kept saying I didn't know how people were
going to take it." [how would people react
to saying you need help]
Dan: re: they're working on some
consumer stuff and personal finances:
"I'm learning so much because this is not my
area. This is one area where Val knows a lot
more than I do because she pays the bills. This
is actually preparation for me."
Dan: "We [L4L] should work
together more with the living wage campaign,
because they're on the financial end and we have
a more personal connection."
