Application Guidelines
Swarthmore College's tradition of conscience and social change is evident in the opportunities for community service provided through CIVIC and through projects supported by the Swarthmore Foundation. Beginning in the spring of 1998 Lang Opportunity Grants become available. Lang Opportunity Grants provide more extensive support for the most promising projects involving social action.
Grants are made possible by Eugene Lang '38, founder of the "I Have a Dream" Foundation, which pays for the college education of deserving young people; recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and college benefactor.
The Lang Opportunity Open Competition Grant is awarded to those few competitors whose proposals meet or exceed Committee requirements.
Applications are reviewed by The Lang Committee early in the spring term.
There are two possible approaches to the final competition. The first approach begins with the idea for a Project that requires further development, detail, and clarity. In this instance, the scholar may receive funding up to $1,000.00 for a feasibility study. Receiving a grant for a feasibility study does not ensure that project will succeed during the final competition. Feasibility funds simply allows the scholar to further develop their project proposal.
The other approach begins with a completed, detailed, fully developed proposal which is ready for submission to the final competition for grant funds up to $10,000.
Funds exist for two Open Competition Grants (up to $10,000 each) and two project feasibility studies (up to $1,000 each). However, if an entire pool of the proposals lack rigor, it is possible that none of the applicants will receive funding.
