Academic Enrichment

Every Lang scholar has $1500 for academic enrichment or proposal feasibility studies. In addition to the regular educational resources, the internship and project opportunities, these funds expand the Scholar's research, learning, and growth opportunities.

The money can be used to:

1) Purchase special books, videos, journal subscriptions, or computer programs, etc.

2) Help to purchase a computer or printer or upgrade

3) Attend conferences or meetings

4) Learn or improve a skill, such as public speaking, foreign language, film making, an artistic technique

5) Add to the project funds by paying for feasibility studies or purchasing things for the project.

These funds may be accessed by submitting a brief statement including a budget and a reason for the expenditure. If the expenses concern possible Project ideas, the Scholar should submit a brief concept proposal, outlining the possible project, the objectives, what problem is being addressed, where it will be done, the time frame, etc.

Swarthmore can purchase items through a tax-free number, so you should use that information when purchasing things. Sometimes, this will require an official College purchase order. If you pay for items through check, cash, or credit card, you need to submit those bills to get your repayment. You can get a cash advance that then requires the submission of receipts for the items after the purchase.

The Lang Scholar Advisor will review the proposals, and make a decision, possibly with the help of the Committee. NOTE: Scholars should not expect to spend all of the educational money in the first year. Generally, these funds will be allocated at a prorated amount of $375/year or could accrue for future expenses. The prorated system recognizes that ideas and priorities can change over the years. The fund will only pay up to $750.00 towards the purchase of a computer.
