Program Summary

wow1PURPOSE

To increase literacy and computer skills of elementary school children in and around Chester public housing through language enrichment, writing, illustration and publishing developed from experiences in their neighborhood, on field trips and from guest artists during the summer.

 

OBJECTIVESwow2

¥ To expand children's vocabulary, concepts and experiences

¥ To enable children to create their own stories with illustrations and publish them

¥ To have children recognize community members as resources

¥ To strengthen adult residents' literacy and computer skills

 

METHODS

¥ Modeling by adults of how to work together across cultural differences and conflicts

¥ Increase literacy skill development of adult community residents to be resources to community children

¥ Field trips to enlarge the life experiences of participants

¥ Daily thematic writing and revision of stories

¥ Use of computers to word process stories

¥ Identification, explanation and practice of elements of writing
