AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

 

Program Summary

PURPOSE

To provide a safe and nurturing after school environment for elementary and middle school children that promotes academic accomplishments, pride, self-worth and determination.

 

OBJECTIVES

¥ To provide assistance to children with homework

¥ To reinforce classroom learning objectives

¥ To expose children to individual and community responsibility through culturally relevant themes

¥ To develop children confident in their own ability to learn

METHODS

¥ Strengthen skills of community residents to operate an after school program and tutor students daily through training

¥ Provide transportation for Swarthmore College students to assist residents with tutoring in the after school center

¥ Provide skills training of college students to tutor students

¥ Build upon the current rea

ctive model that primarily addresses homework by incorporating proactive initiatives in cultural awareness, community responsibility, and selected academic and artistic disciplines

¥ Encourage the development of relationships that support and nurture children's abilities

¥ Encourage parents to participate in after school center activities

¥ Cooperate with classroom teachers to strengthen children's abilities

¥ Assist children in setting short and long term goals to enhance their ability to recognize their own accomplishments
