Urvashi Butalia
Ms. Urvashi Butalia, the founder of Kali for Women, India's
first women's publishing house, is concerned primarily with
publishing Third World studies on women. Kali was set up in
1984 as a trust to increase the body of knowledge on women
in the Third World, to give voice to such knowledge as already
exists, and to provide a forum for women writers, creative
and academic. She has been active in the women's movement
in India, in international citizen's exchange conferences,
and in researching the modern history of India. She recently
edited two books: Speaking Peace: Women Voices from Kashmir
and The Other Side of Silence: Voices from the Partition of
India.
