Ms. Urvashi Butalia, the founder of Kali for Women, India's first women's publishing house, is concerned primarily with publishing Third World studies on women. Kali was set up in 1984 as a trust to increase the body of knowledge on women in the Third World, to give voice to such knowledge as already exists, and to provide a forum for women writers, creative and academic. She has been active in the women's movement in India, in international citizen's exchange conferences, and in researching the modern history of India. She recently edited two books: Speaking Peace: Women Voices from Kashmir and The Other Side of Silence: Voices from the Partition of India.
